Reports: Teen in custody following reports of ‘armed intruder’ at Saugus mall

SAUGUS, Mass. (AP) — An incident that shut down a Saugus mall for hours appears to be over.

Several Boston media outlets are reporting a teenager is in custody in connection with the incident.

According to CBS affiliate WBZ in Boston, police said the suspect broke into Square One Mall and stole a gun from a sporting goods store.

Officers responded to the mall early Monday morning for reports of a break-in at a sporting goods store and an “armed and dangerous intruder” who was thought to be inside.

State and local police responded and SWAT was called in after police said they encountered the teen in the store.

WBZ reported that SWAT searched the entire mall but could not find the teen. Police said officers arrested the teen in Everett.

The break-in at Dick’s Sporting Goods occurred before normal business hours and employees had not yet reported to work.

There have been no reports of injuries.

People were asked to stay away from the mall, which was closed until the situation was resolved. Police said Dick’s Sporting Good likely would remain closed the entire day.
