Police ID victim of Providence shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man is dead and another is in serious condition following a shooting in the city late Tuesday night.

Providence police responded at about 10:30 p.m. to reports of shots fired at 62 Nicholas Brown Yards, located near the intersection of Olney and Prospect Streets at the University Heights apartment complex.

James Goddard, 28, was found shot and killed in his vehicle, according to Major David Lapatin. Investigators believe Goddard was targeted.

A second victim, a 28-year-old man, was sitting in his apartment when he was struck by a stray bullet that went through his sliding glass door. Lapatin said he underwent surgery at Rhode Island Hospital and is currently in critical condition, but he’s expected to recover.

According to Lapatin, the two victims likely did not know each other and the shooting was possibly gang-motivated.

Goddard had “a history” with Providence police, Lapatin added.

At this time, no arrests have been made and the investigation is still ongoing. Police are also increasing patrols in the University Heights neighborhood.
