Crime

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WPRI) – Massachusetts State Police stopped a wrong-way driver on Route 195 after he caused a multi-vehicle crash Sunday.

State police say the man had been driving westbound in the eastbound lanes in Mattapoisett just before 3:30 p.m.

State police used social media to warn motorists to be extra vigilant on the road in the area.

According to police, the 87-year-old Swansea man continued driving west on the eastbound side of Route 195 in New Bedford, even after causing a crash.

The driver was traveling in a 2011 Toyota Camry in Fairhaven, when a 28-year-old New Bedford woman swerved in her 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser to avoid the Camry, and veered off the road, striking a tree. She was brought to Tobey Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and subsequently released.

Officers with the Fairhaven Police Department were able to stop the driver following the crash. State police had the driver in custody just after 3:30 p.m.

The elderly driver was issued a summons for Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle. State Police also notified the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

State Police were assisted by the Fairhaven Police Department, and the Mattapoisett Fire Department and EMS.
