Homicide investigation underway after shooting in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A man is dead after he was shot in the upper body early Saturday morning on Corinth Street in Providence.

Police tell Eyewitness News the shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. outside Noah Lounge at 1137 Broad Street, which is at the corner of Corinth and Broad Streets.

“There were shots fired, several officers were close enough to hear the gunshots,” Providence police Deputy Chief Thomas Verdi tells Eyewitness News. “Then there was a car related — we’re investigating — we think related to the homicide. That car was stopped; the person taken into custody.”

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Devin Burney, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by ambulance but later died of his injuries. Burney is Providence’s fourth homicide victim this year.

Rhode Island Hospital was temporarily placed on lock down overnight.

“There was a large crowd at the hospital, Rhode Island Hospital,” said Verdi. “It’s their policy, their protocol, when they feel it’s necessary to go into lock down, they did.”

Police say 15-20 officers responded to the scene to deal with crowds of people because a nearby club was letting out around the same time of the shooting. State Police were also called to the shooting scene to assist with traffic.

“There were several hundred people, it was very chaotic,” said Verdi. “The officers did a commendable job.”

A suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting but investigators have not yet identified that person or indicated if they’ve charged him with the shooting. However, police say the shooting was not random.

“We believe that the individual was targeted,” said Verdi.

At an emergency meeting of the city’s Board of Licenses Saturday afternoon, the club was ordered closed for 72 hours pending a full hearing Monday at Providence City Hall.
