Club temporarily closed after triple shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Three people were shot early Sunday morning and police are still searching for suspects.

Commander Thomas Verdi of the Providence Police Department said the three victims, ages 25, 27, and 38, were shot outside Club Luv at 677 Valley Street at about 2 a.m. Sunday.

“Detectives were able to find several shell casings on the scene and also one unspent live round,” according to Providence Police Sergeant David Tejada.

All three victims were treated for their injuries at Rhode Island Hospital. Two victims were discharged, while the third is still listed in critical condition, according to Tejada.

Investigators believe two guns were used in the shooting. Police continue to investigate but Verdi said that so far, nobody is in custody.

Later Sunday, the Providence Board of Licenses held an emergency hearing at police headquarters to discuss the shooting.

Tejada testified before the board Sunday afternoon. He said investigators found the three victims suffering from gunshot wounds at a gas station next door to Club Luv. Police believe the shooting was connected to the club.

“Employees reported there had been an altercation inside the club in the VIP area,” said Tejada. “They reported that was at about 1:40 a.m. and the call for the shooting came in at 1:55.”

Tejada said investigators also found two cars riddled with bullet holes nearby.

“The command staff is very concerned about public safety,” said Tejada during his Board of Licenses testimony. “They’re concerned that if the establishment remains open immediately after an incident of this magnitude that it may place patrons, business owners, and the public at risk.”

The board voted to keep the club closed for 72 hours until a full hearing can be held Wednesday afternoon.

The next step for police is to obtain the club’s surveillance video. An attorney for Club Luv says they plan to cooperate fully with police in their investigation.
