1 dead, 1 injured in Glocester crash; suspect in custody

GLOCESTER, R.I. (WPRI) — Police have arrested a Connecticut man following a two-car crash on Putnam Pike near Cady’s Tavern Wednesday.

According to police, Samuel Smith, 27, lost control of his vehicle around 10 p.m. after attempting to spin his tires while leaving the tavern’s parking lot. Police said he then struck a car heading in the opposite direction on Putnam Pike, causing it to slam into a tree.

Police said two victims, identified as 71-year-old Marie Castonguay and 73-year-old Lawrence Castonguay of Burrillville, were sent to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to police, Lawrence Castonguay later died as a result of his injuries.

“It’s very upsetting when someone loses their life because of a poor decision of another party,” Captain Joseph Mattera said. “It’s upsetting and frustrating because it’s something that could have been easily prevented.”

Police said Smith was treated at the scene and suffered minor injuries. He faces two felony charges: driving to endanger death resulting and driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury. He was arraigned Monday and is being held on $10,000 bail with surety.

Smith is scheduled to appear back in court in November.
