JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Firefighters from several departments battled a smoky fire at a Johnston scrap yard Tuesday afternoon.

According to Johnston Fire Chief Tim McLaughlin, crews responded to the Green Hill Road scene at about 3 p.m. to find the fire more fully involved than anticipated.

McLaughlin said the building is a recycling plant, and the yard was full of combustible materials such as cardboard and paper.

The chief said the water supply was sparse because there was only one hydrant in the area, so a tanker was called in from northern Rhode Island. Mutual aid from North Providence and Cranston responded to the scene, as well as the state fire marshal.

There were no injuries. The cause remains under investigation.
