Cranston homeowner taken to hospital after garage fire


CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Officials in Cranston are investigating a garage fire on Poplar Drive.

Crews arrived at the scene around 3:45 p.m. on Sunday.  Fire officials say the flames started in an attached garage and smoke spread into the attic through the home’s air ducts and air conditioning units.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it spread into the kitchen, officials said, though the whole house was filled with smoke at one time.

Officials said an elderly man was transported to Kent Hospital with minor burns to his head. A woman was also home, but she was not injured, according to fire officials.

The house only sustained minor damage from the smoke, though the garage was completed charred and will need to be torn down.

Officials said the fire is still under investigation.
