BRISTOL, Conn. (WPRI) — It took them an extra game to do it, but the boys on the Coventry Little League team are headed to the finals of the New England Regionals and they did it walk-off fashion.
The team was down 5 to 0 going into the sixth inning in its game against New Hampshire Friday afternoon when the boys launched their comeback.
After scoring four runs, Tommy Turner got up to the plate and singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs to win the game.
Turner – who pitched a perfect game in Coventry’s first regional game against Connecticut – was also the winning pitcher in Friday’s game, coming in to relieve starter Jake Mather.
The team will now face Massachusetts in the championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. The winner of that game goes to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
If they were to do so, Coventry would be the fourth Rhode Island team to reach the Little League World Series in the last five years.
