Council designates fire captain as interim chief in East Greenwich

News

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) –The East Greenwich Town Council appointed a fire department captain as the interim chief of the department in an unusual special meeting Saturday morning.

The East Greenwich News reports, Fire Chief Russell McGillivray went on a two-week medical leave which started last week, and that the chief also took a one-week vacation earlier this month.

During that time, EG News reports McGillivray appointed Captain Thomas Mears to lead the department.

Saturday morning at Town Hall, the Council voted to appoint Mears as interim chief while McGillivray is out. Prior to the vote, rumors had persisted that an ex-chief would be brought in to lead the department in his absence.
