NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a sailor Monday who was reported missing after he didn’t arrive in New Bedford as planned.

The Coast Guard said it began searching Buzzard’s Bay for Peter Horan and his 34-foot cabin cruiser “Best Friends” after receiving a call from his caretaker.

Horan, 80, had set sail from Cuttyhunk, Mass., Monday morning, according to the Coast Guard. The agency dispatched air and boat crews and contacted several partner agencies in hopes of finding Horan.

Search crews overheard a radio hail from a good Samaritan regarding the vessel “Best Friends,” which was in the area of the Sakonnet River.

A 45-foot response boat then located Horan and brought him to Sakonnet Harbor, where his family and emergency medical services awaited.

The Coast Guard said crews searched about 425 square miles to find Horan, almost the size of New York City.
