CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Chapel Grille will no longer be accepting gift certificates from Faial’s Restaurant after several people tried to take advantage of the offer, the Cranston eatery announced Monday.

Faial’s Restaurant unexpectedly closed its two locations in Smithfield last month, leaving hundreds of people with seemingly worthless gift certificates.

After hearing that the attorney general’s office received complaints from 750 customers, Chapel Grille announced they would honor the gift certificates until the end of August.

The offer was cut short Monday after the restaurant said they started noticing a pattern of people attempting to exchange what appeared to be “fresh prints of certificates or blatant forgeries of certificates.”

Chapel Grille said they will continue to honor the hundreds of cards that were already exchanged through August 31.

Consumers with questions about Faial’s gift certificates should contact the Consumer Protection Unit of the attorney general’s office at (401) 274-4400.
