WAREHAM, Mass. (AP) — A former Boston Herald editor who was attacked by a shark in North Carolina this month has returned home.

Andrew Costello said Monday he remains focused on his “long road of recovery.”

Costello thanks his family and friends and the staff at the Greenville, North Carolina, hospital where he was treated “for their love, support and excellent care.”

The Vidant Medical Center’s head of trauma and acute care surgery has praised Costello’s courage.

The 67-year-old Costello lives in Wareham. He was bitten by the shark on his ribs, hips, legs and hands as he swam with his son July 1 in waist-deep water near a lifeguard stand off Ocracoke, North Carolina. He was discharged Saturday.

His shark attack was part of a rare series of attacks off North Carolina this summer.
