Candidates push for more votes night before recall election

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Candidates in the Fall River recall election are making their final efforts to campaign the night before election day.

The recall election was prompted by the arrest of Mayor Jasiel Correia last October. The mayor, 27, is facing more than a dozen counts of wire fraud and filing false tax returns.

Prosecutors allege Correia misused $231,000 of the $363,000 he accepted from seven investors into SnoOwl, the app company he founded in 2012, while misleading them about the business. The mayor has repeatedly denied all the charges against him.

Following a vote of “no confidence” from the Fall River City Council and Correia’s repeated refusal to resign, the city scheduled Tuesday’s recall election.

Four candidates are challenging Correia in the recall election: Councilman Joe Camara, School Committee member Paul Coogan, school administrator Kyle Riley and Director of Development for the South Coastal Legal Services Erica Scott-Pacheco.

The five candidates squared off in a debate on Feb. 28, addressing not only the allegations against Correia, but also how to better the city as a whole.

According to the Fall River Board of Elections, there will be 29 polling locations open at 8 a.m. Tuesday across the city. A spokesperson for the Board of Elections says they are hoping for a 25% voter turnout and have already mailed out 601 absentee ballots.

There will be two questions on the ballot for voters. The first question will ask if the voter wants to recall Correia. If yes, the second question asks the voter who they would choose of his four opponents.

Any voter who is inactive because they haven’t voted in a year or returned their census last year just needs to show an ID to prove they still live in the city.
