Brown University staff sets Guinness World Record

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Setting a new Guinness World Record meant a good day for Brown University staff.

More than 500 staff members got together Wednesday during the school’s 25th Staff Development Day to try and set a new world record by filling 3,000 backpacks with school supplies in one hour.

The University partnered with United Way of Rhode Island, an organization that helps children get the essentials they need to learn, to distribute the backpacks to children in need this summer.

“The Hasbro Summer learning initiative will receive the backpacks. That is a sort of summer camp meets summer school program that goes on all summer,” Angel Hilliard, Communication and Program Manager at Brown University, said. “There are 14 learning sites throughout Rhode Island so these 3,000 backpacks will be dispersed from Woonsocket to Westerly.”

After the hour was over, a Guinness official confirmed that the world record had been broken.
