BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (AP / WPRI) — Bridgewater police say two pit bulls were found shot to death in a wooded area of town, and suspect the animals may have been used in dog fighting.

Eric Wendland says he was just headed out with his two dogs, Scout and Chief, on Sunday for a normal walk through a popular hiking trail — when he discovered the gruesome scene.

Wendlend discovered the bodies of two adult male pit bulls lying in the snow next to the trail.

“I saw the dead pit bull and then looked over and about 20 feet was another death pit bull,” he said. “And then from there, I grabbed the dogs and headed out and called the police.”

Police say they were shot in the head with a small caliber weapon.

Police Lt. Tom Schlatz says the dogs also had other injuries that led officials to believe that they had been involved in dog fighting. He says it did not appear as if the dogs had been there long.

Necropsies are being performed and police are seeking the public’s help in finding whoever is responsible.

Police say they had recently heard rumors of a possible dog fighting ring in the area.

“It’s obvious that there’s a bigger issue at hand,” Lt. Schlatz said.

Authorities say this is the second incident recently — a male pit bull was found dead in Middleboro last month.
