PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a body was found in the water near Collier Park in Providence.

Police tell Eyewitness News, a passerby saw the body and called police around 2 p.m. Saturday.

A Providence Fire Department boat was launched while Providence police investigated at the shoreline and crime scene tape was put up around the area.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin says investigators are working to identify the person.  It’s not known if the body is that of a man or a woman.

“The indication we have is that it’s been in there for some time,” Major Lapatin said, adding it does not look like foul play was a involved.  “We’re looking at it like we look at every one that we find and there’s no indication right now of any foul play but we’ll still keep looking.”

The medical examiner will now determine the cause of death.
