NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — A black bear was spotted in Narragansett Monday morning.
In a video sent in via ReportIt!, the bear can be seen strolling through a yard near Oxeye Trail and Bridgetown Road.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) said anyone who sees a bear should report it.
“The presence of a bear in a backyard will not necessarily require or justify its removal or other action,” the DEM said in a statement. “Given the opportunity, the bear will find its way out of an area.”
The DEM provided some tips about what to do if you see or encounter a bear:
- Remember that a bear’s behavior can be unpredictable.
- Stay calm and remember that most bears do not want to attack you, they usually just want to be left alone.
- Do NOT allow the bear access to your food. Getting your food will only encourage the bear and make the problem worse for others.
- If the bear is stationary, move away slowly and sideways. This allows you to keep an eye on the bear and avoid tripping.
