Beating the odds in computer apps and life

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — A local teenager is taking a dive into the ever-competitive world of computer apps – but, he’s beaten bigger odds before.

There are about 4.5 million apps available for your phone. Now, you can add one more from an inventor who wasn’t supposed to make it to age 18.

Anthony Curreri knows the inside of a computer better than most people know the outside of one – but his app idea started with what he admitted was a low-tech drawing.

“It doesn’t look like it makes sense,” he said. “No it doesn’t but it does to me.”

Similar scrawls were the first strokes in teaming up with his cousin who owns several pieces of rental property. Curreri created the foundation for an electronic way to connect tenants and landlords, saving both parties time in everything from collecting rent to requesting repairs.

After a substantial cash investment – and 18 months – there was finally an app for that: Rent-Pal.

“It was awesome. It was a feeling of satisfaction that we touched upon a person and they downloaded the app.

Curreri’s mother and father say they couldn’t be prouder of their son – who beat the odds as a child.

According to his mother, Curreri was born with his mother says was basically half a heart.

“They said he had a five percent chance that he would make it,” said Michelle Curreri, his mother.

With each one of 13 operations over the next 10 years, his odds only got better. But the entire ordeal was probably more grueling on his parents – since Curreri only remembers one operation.

“I think about 10 years old,” he said. “I remember going in for that one.” When asked if he remembers any other surgeries, he said no.

“No, not at all. I guess the doctors did a pretty good job of knocking me out.”

Curreri’s family doesn’t talk about that stuff much because it’s in the past. His ideas, though, are in the future.

“I really like to focus on mobile apps and inventing things and seeing how things work,” he said. “It’s a really big part of my life.”

So far, Curreri has sold about 20 Rent-Pal subscriptions but he said he is hoping for more.

Plus, he said he’s not done inventing.
