Avocado toast, curry, smoothies being added to Garden City food offerings

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A new rustic cafe, a smoothie-and-sandwich place, and a savory Indian restaurant are set to open over the course of the coming months at Garden City Center, as the Cranston shopping complex celebrates its 70th year in operation.

Sydney Garden City, a cafe that draws inspiration from Australia which has a sister location in Providence, will offer baked goods, coffees and teas — and what Garden City spokesperson Rebecca Pazienza called the cafe’s “famed avocado toast” — when it opens in winter 2019 in a cluster near the north end of shops, next to Anthropologie.

Chaska, an Indian restaurant from the proprietors of Kabob and Curry in Providence, Rasoi in Pawtucket, and Rasa in East Greenwich, will offer spiced curries and naans as well as other Indian delicacies. It’ll be located across the way from the new Sydney, next to Bistro 22.

At the end of this month, a branch of Tropical Smoothie Cafe is set to open in newly-built retail space in the southwestern edge of the complex, between Newport Creamery and Bank of America. Garden City removed its iconic shrubs last fall to make way for that restaurant.

Other restaurants set to open in the future include a Legal Sea Bar casual dining and patio restaurant and neighborhood sports bar Tavern in the Square, Pazienza said.
