NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — It didn’t take long for police to track down a man they say tried to rob a bank in New Bedford.
Authorities say Javier Acevedo Ferrer, 30, walked into St. Anthony’s Credit Union on Acushnet Avenue Friday afternoon, and handed a teller a note. It demanded cash, and claimed he was armed with a gun. No weapon was shown, and the suspect fled the bank empty-handed.
When police reviewed surveillance photos of the suspect, investigators recognized him as Ferrer. Officers were dispatched to his Hope Street apartment, where he was found hiding in a bedroom closet. The note police say was used in the attempted robbery was also recovered at Ferrer’s apartment.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in New Bedford District Court on Monday.
