Army vet remembered after deadly fall from cruise ship

HULL, Mass. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a man fell overboard and died in the water off of Hull, Massachusetts Saturday night.

Officials confirm, the man who died, Aaron Dibella, 21, of Peabody, went overboard after engaging in “horseplay.”

They said the victim was onboard the Provincetown II, which had been rented out for a private party. Bay State Cruises, the company that owns the ship, said the victim was horsing around before he fell overboard by Peddocks Island.

The Coast Guard says it received a call around 8:30 p.m. about a man overboard. Coast Guard crews, Massachusetts State Police dive teams, and other agencies responded.

Dibella served in the US Army. A friend of Dibella, on board at the time called this a freak accident. He says it took several minutes to get back to where Dibella went over.

Investigators say a security guard from the from the ship went into the water to try to save him, but couldn’t reach him.

State police divers found Dibella’s body just before 1 a.m. Sunday near Weymouth.

The Plymouth County District Attorney’s office is investigating the case.
