Amputation risk prompts recall of playground slides

Playworld Lightning Slide recall_393078

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Pennsylvania company is recalling stainless steel playground slides because they pose an injury risk to children.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Playworld issued the recall because the weld between the Lightning Slide’s bedway and sidewall can crack and separate. A child’s fingers can get caught in the space, posing an amputation hazard, the agency said.

Playworld has received 13 reports of the welds breaking, including two in which children suffered finger amputations.

About 1,300 slides are affected, including ones with single and double bedways. There are no identifying marks on the slides, according to the CPSC, but the agency said they have continuous welds running from top to bottom, connecting the bedways to the sidewalls.

The slides were sold at independent distributors to parks, schools, and municipalities for $1,500 to $4,000 from Nov. 2000 through Oct. 2016.

Consumers should stop using the slides immediately and contact Playworld for a free replacement slide and installation. The company said a temporary barrier will be shipped to consumers to prevent children from using the slide prior to the new one being installed.

Playworld can be contacted at 800‐233‐8404 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or by email at
