PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Your latest Amazon order could be delivered right into your vehicle.
Amazon Key already allows in-home delivery. Now, the online retail giant is offering in-car delivery free for millions of its Prime members.
Alyssa Bronikowski, an Amazon spokesperson, told CBS News it’s a secure way to receive your packages.
“All you need to do is park the car within two blocks of the selected shipping address that you provide during checkout,” Bronikowski said.
Customers who use the service will receive an alert on their Amazon Key app the morning of the delivery. They will also receive a final notification when the car is locked with the package inside.
Kristen Regine, a retail and marketing professor at Johnson and Wales University, says Amazon’s in-car delivery will force other retailers to launch creative delivery options.
“As we’re busier and just more stressed out, and we have more things on our plate, retailers are looking for ways to really deliver ease into our homes and ease into our lives,” Regine said. “When we look at the shopping experience, the technology is really going to be a key driver.”
In-car delivery is only available in 37 cities. Call 12 for Action checked Providence zip codes and got the green light, but in-car delivery is not available for Fall River zip codes.
There are also limitations on which vehicles are eligible for in-car delivery. According to Amazon, the service works with with most Chevy, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Volvo vehicles that are equipped with On-Star or Volvo On-Call.
