GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — It’s American Heart Month and you should celebrate by feeding your body the right foods.

A healthy heart starts with the right diet.

This list of foods provides the right balance of fats, amino acids, vitamins and more to keep your heart pumping strong your entire life.

To help you get started on the journey, here are eight superfoods to add to your grocery list:

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a good source of potassium and folate. It can help lower levels of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol).

Salmon

Salmon is full of omega-3, which can help reduce blood pressure.

Avocado

Avocado is a heart-healthy and safe fat. Avocado can help lower LDL cholesterol levels and raise HDL cholesterol levels (the good cholesterol).

Olive Oil

Olive Oil can reduce your chances of developing heart disease. The monosaturated fats contribute to a healthy heart.

Nuts

Adding nuts to your diet increases your fiber consumption. Fiber is important for maintaining stable blood glucose levels and regular bowel movements.

Berries

Berrie are anti-inflammatory and can reduce your chances of developing cancer.

Legumes

Legumes are rich in soluble fiber which helps your body slow digestion and absorb necessary nutrients.

Spinach
