LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) – All full-time firefighters from the Lonsdale Fire District have been laid off due to the district’s financial problems.
The district’s board held a meeting Saturday and determined the station could no longer afford to pay its employees.
The fire district will not close, and rescue crews funded by the town will still have access to the building.
At the meeting, it was revealed that the district only has about $14,500 in its bank account.
Lincoln has six fire districts, and Councilman Bruce Ogni knows today’s decision by the board was a tough one.
“I have full faith and confidence that these guys, who I know some of them, [and] I know will do a great job in getting us to where we need to be and find out how this happened and how we go forward from here,” he said.
Saylesville Fire District will now respond to calls in Lonsdale’s former coverage area.
