PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating after a teen was stabbed in the back near an East Providence playground, Eyewitness News has learned.
According to East Providence Police Lt. Raymond Blinn, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed during a fight between several teenagers Wednesday near Onna Moniz-John Park.
“I didn’t really expect to see my friend get stabbed or anything like that,” bystander Joel Castillo tells Eyewitness News. “It was kind of dramatic.”
Castillo said the group of teens wanted to meet up to discuss a conflict when they began physically fighting.
“It turned into something bigger that it didn’t need to turn into,” he said.
Blinn said the boy suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital where he was later released.
Police arrested three juveniles, a 17-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, who Blinn said were involved in the altercation. All three are being charged with assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.
Two of the juveniles were released, but one of the boys is being held at the Rhode Island Training School.
Eyewitness News has learned all of the teens involved are known to police.
The incident remains under investigation.
