3 Rhode Island schools receive national Blue Ribbon honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Three Rhode Island schools have received national Blue Ribbon awards.

Archie R. Cole Middle School in East Greenwich, Francis J. Varieur Elementary School in Pawtucket and Nayatt School in Barrington were named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2015.

The U.S. Department of Education says it chose the schools based on their overall academic excellence and their progress in closing achievement gaps.

Gov. Gina Raimondo says the Blue Ribbon is the highest honor the Department of Education awards to schools.

The Democratic governor says the awards show the schools rank among the best in the nation.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools based on student scores and graduation rates.
