WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating what may have caused a serious car accident in Warwick on Friday.

According to police, the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. in the area of 292 West Shore Road.

A pickup truck and a car collided head-on, police said, and three people were injured.

Police said a mother and a 3-year-old child were in the car and both sustained serious injuries. The child was taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, while the mom was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

The man who was driving the pickup truck was also taken to RI Hospital, according to officials.

Police said a third vehicle, which was driving behind the first two, swerved to avoid the crash and ended up striking a tree. The driver was not hurt.

Officers say alcohol was not involved and a police reconstruction team is investigating the cause of the accident.

The road was closed for hours while crews cleared the scene.
