CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Cranston police say they’ve arrested three people accused of breaking into cars early Wednesday morning.
When officers arrived on Curtis Street, they found two of the suspects crouched behind two parked cars. When the pair became aware of the police, they took off running. Officers arrested them a short time later.
Authorities say one of the men had a backpack that contained GPS devices, change, and cell phones that had been reported stolen. Officers say then then found a 15-year-old boy on the bike path near Dean Street with a backpack. Inside there was jewelry, electronics and more than $100 in change. Other items recovered by police included: phone charges, change purses, clothing, and sunglasses.
Police arrested Damian Dorsey, 20, and Casey Morin, 18, both of Warwick. They are each charged with larceny from a motor vehicle, conspiracy, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and simple assault and battery. The 15-year-old was also arrested, and later released to a parent. He will be petitioned to Family Court.
Col. Michael Winquist says Cranston has seen a 106% increase in thefts from vehicles, and 92% jump in car thefts this year compared to 2015.
