SAUGUS, Mass. (WPRI) — A fatal officer-involved shooting in Saugus, Massachusetts is under investigation, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office
Police responded to a home on Alfred Road around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday after receiving a call to assist with a distressed female family member, according to the DA’s office.
When officers entered the home, a 38-year-old woman allegedly confronted the officers with a knife, the DA’s office said.
One of the officers then fired his gun, striking the woman, according to the DA’s office. The officers began rendering aid, but the woman died from her injuries.
The officers were uninjured, the DA’s office added, but were taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
The officer who fired his duty weapon has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. His name has not been released.
The incident remains under investigation.
