PRINCETON, Mass. (WPRI) — The skier who died in after crashing into a tree on Wachusett Mountain earlier this week has been identified.

John Lapato, 67, of Shrewsbury, was found unconscious by another skier on an advanced trail Monday morning, according to authorities.

First responders rushed Lapato to the bottom of the mountain where he was later pronounced dead.

“The entire Wachusett family is grieving this tragic loss,” a spokesperson for the resort said in a statement. “All of our thoughts are with the skier’s family and friends.”

Lapato’s death remains under investigation at this time.
