Pilot dies after plane crash into northern Mass. building

Massachusetts

METHUEN, Mass. (WPRI) — A former city councilor and mayor of Newburyport died Tuesday after he crashed a small plane into a building in Methuen.

According to police, Al Lavender was attempting to land at a nearby airport when he smashed through the roof of a residential building on Riverview Boulevard.

No other injuries were reported. Police said no one was in the two condos at the time of the crash and other people inside the building were evacuated safely.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Lavender was flying a Sonex, which is a plane he built himself using a kit.

The residential building caught fire as a result of the crash.

The FAA and NTSB continue to investigate.
