Thousands attending funeral of fallen Maine deputy

Maine

BANGOR, Maine (WPRI) — For the second time in less than a month, law enforcement officers from all over the country will be returning to New England to say farewell to a fallen hero.

The funeral service for Corporal Eugene Cole will be held Monday in Bangor, at the Cross Insurance Center.

He was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 25, just one week after the funeral for Yarmouth K-9 Sergeant Sean Gannon.

Cole worked for the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office in Maine for 13 years.

Family, friends, law enforcement, and community members gathered to give their condolences to the Cole family at his wake in Maine Sunday.

His colleagues say his presence will be deeply missed.

Family was everything to Cole. His relatives say that made it even more special for the corporal to work alongside his son, David, at the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Cole’s death set off a four-day manhunt for the suspect.

John Williams appeared in court last week and was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.
