PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Holiday cheer filled the air on Smith Hill Thursday evening as state leaders held their annual Christmas tree lighting celebration.
Gov. Gina Raimondo and her family led the countdown as the State House tree was illuminated.
The 18-foot Douglas fir was donated by Bedrock Tree Farm in South Kingstown.
The celebration featured performances from “The Governor’s Own” 88th Army Band, the Mixed Magic Theater Exult Choir, the Ponaganset High School Chamber Chorus, and Wheeler Middle School Chorus, along with a reading of The Night Before Christmas by the governor and first gentleman.
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus also paid a visit from the North Pole.
Attendees were asked to bring an unwrapped toy for the Rhode Island State Police “Fill a Cruiser” drive. The donations will be distributed by local charities to children in need.
“A Christmas Story” is one of my favorite Christmas movies!! @RIVetsDirector nailed it with his Ralphie bunny costume for the 🎄 lighting tonight ! @wpri12 pic.twitter.com/AkiAABJBd0— Caroline Goggin (@CarolineGoggin) November 29, 2018
