PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) ─ Due to the closure of schools across Rhode Island and Massachusetts, free “Grab and Go” meals will be available for students, especially since many children depend on them.
The kids are their own tickets to the meal, according to Aramark’s Renee Bramble.
“People just need to drive up with the kids in the car,” said Bramble, a school catering employee in Cranston. “As many kids as you have in the car, we will give you the meal to anyone 18 and under.”
Bramble said no one will be required to show proof of residency or an ID.
In East Providence, Superintendent Kathryn Crowley said that in her 44 years in education, this kind of shutdown and contingency plan is unprecedented.
“We’re doing this by trial and error, to be honest,” she said. “But the first concern is the safety of our children, and making sure that our families have food.”
Bramble said schools can’t give adults meals on behalf of a child. The child must be present to receive a meal.
Providence schools are switching to a distribution twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday food distribution will include three breakfast and three lunch packages. Friday food distribution will include four breakfast and four lunch packages.
