NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Electric Boat marked the beginning of construction on new submarine-manufacturing facilities Monday with a ground-breaking at the Quonset Business Park.
Sen. Jack Reed, ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, attended the event with Gov. Gina Raimondo, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, and Rep. Jim Langevin, as well as the president of Electric Boat, Jeff Geiger.
Two buildings are being added to Electric Boat’s campus.
Reed’s office noted that Electric Boat will be hiring 1,000 more workers at its Quonset location this year. Reed has been consistently supporting manufacturing and jobs to support defense.
“I want us to be the world leader in undersea technologies and marine innovation,” Reed said, adding that more subs being built at Quonset will lead to growth for other businesses throughout the state.
