Award-winning journalist Basil John joined the Washington, DC, Bureau in January 2020.
Basil started his career in February 2017 as a reporter and anchor for WWAY News in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he covered stories like the chemical GenX in the drinking water and Hurricane Florence. In November 2019, Basil joined WRIC Channel 8 News in Richmond, Virginia, as a morning reporter and fill-in anchor. There, he covered breaking news almost every morning and reported on the Governor Ralph Northam blackface scandal and the Gun Rights rally in Richmond.
He is a New Yorker from the city of New Rochelle. Basil attended Iona Preparatory School where he participated in speech and debate competitions, which led to an interest in presenting in front of others.
Basil’s love for delivering stories took him to Stony Brook University’s Journalism School in Long Island where he received a degree in journalism with a concentration in public affairs and a minor in political science. During his time at Stony Brook, Basil learned the ins and outs of journalism and was presented with many opportunities. He interned for CBS News in New York in its broadcast marketing department.
In Washington, Basil takes his experience in community-driven journalism to tell stories that matter to the people affected. In his free time, Basil can be found singing, gaming, and training his parrot Laddu.
