In order to look and feel your best you need to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but more importantly, it is crucial that you stay active.

For this week’s Project Fitness personal wellness coach Joshua Oldrid joined The Rhode Show set to discuss this idea of staying active with exercises that can be done at home.

“What you want to do is a high-intensity type workout," said Oldrid. "What that means is a lot of cardio, you want to bring your heart-rate up, and maybe hold a formation for you know, longer than 45 seconds to 60 seconds or so.”

The first exercise technique Oldrid introduced was the plank. Oldrid said this position should be held for more than 60 seconds and its purpose is to strengthen the core muscles.

“If anybody doesn’t know too much about planking, what you want to do is get your body aligned up, keep your legs close together, and bring your arms into a V formation and you just kind of want to stay there,” said Oldrid.

For his next exercise, Oldrid introduced flutter kicks, which help strengthen the lower abs and back areas of the body. He explained that it was a great exercise for home because it does not require much space.

Oldrid said his third exercise known as squats works about 200 different muscles in the body and like the flutter kicks, it is an exercise that can be done anywhere.

“The whole point of this is really just to hold in a place for a period of time,” said Oldrid.

The fourth exercise he introduced as the mountain climber works the inner core muscles and can be done at any pace. It requires you to hold a push-up position while alternating bringing your knees in towards the opposite shoulder.

“This really works your oblique muscles and works on that V-line that a lot of men and women like for the beach,” said Oldrid.

With all of Oldrid’s great strengthening exercises, there is now an easy and affordable way to stay fit!
