BOSTON, Mass. (WPRI) - Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has appointed Timothy Alben as the new superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police.

Col. Alben replaces Marian McGovern, who became the first female superintendent of the MSP in 2010.

"Tim Alben is a great friend but more important a man of honor who will lead with distinction.  The Department is in good hands." said retiring Colonel Marian McGovern.

Gov. Patrick administered the oath of office to Col. Alben at the state house Friday morning.

Previously, Alben served as Lieutenant Colonel, commanding and managing the Division of Field Services, the largest organizational entity of the Massachusetts State Police.

"Tim Alben brings broad leadership experience and deep professional and personal integrity to this appointment," said Governor Patrick.

Alben's career with the Massachusetts State Police began in 1983 as a trooper.

"I am grateful to Governor Patrick for the confidence he has expressed in my ability to lead this great organization," said Alben.

The Massachusetts State Police was created in 1865 and today comprises of 2,300 sworn officers.
