"Severe" punishment for trooper who leaked report

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A Rhode Island state trooper has been disciplined for giving out the police report on the investigation into the alleged underage drinking party at Governor Chafee's Exeter estate.

Last month, a trooper leaked the police report to WPRO.

According to that report, 18-year-old Caleb Chafee, the governor's son, hosted the underage drinking party.

One teen became so drunk, she was taken to the hospital.

The trooper is not being identified, but State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell tells Eyewitness News his punishment is severe.

"The trooper is being dealt with severely and he'll be disciplined internally.  It's one of those things that we take as seriously as anything is the integrity of our investigations," O'Donnell says.

Governor Chafee says neither he, nor his wife were home at the time.

So far, no criminal charges have been filed.
