Drunk Driving The No. 1 Cause of Fatal Crashes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- State and local police are stepping up patrols to keep the roads safe.

It's part of a national campaign called "Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over" -- which is aimed at keeping drunk drivers off the roadways.

"We are hopeful this high visibility law enforcement campaign will save lives as we close out the summer and celebrate the labor day weekend," Providence Police Chief Col. Hugh Clements said.

During a Friday night press conference, officers issued a stern warning to drivers across the Ocean State.

"For those who insist on ignoring our advice and driving impaired, and put our families and friends at risk, law enforcement officers throughout the state will be there," Col. Steven O'Donnell of the State Police said.

Officials say drunk driving is still the number one cause of fatal accidents in the state -- and that number is on the rise. According to Col. O'Donnell, 45 people have been killed in drunk driving accidents so far this year; compared to 35 at the same time last year.

Drivers who spot someone they suspect may be drunk behind the wheel are encouraged to call *77 for help.
