PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -  Providence police detectives are investigating the city's 57th shooting of the year.

One man, Llovany Dejesus, was shot several times early Tuesday morning in the Olneyville section of the city.

It happened near the intersection of Amherst and Lavaughn Streets.

It's the latest shooting in a recent string of gun violence in the city.

Now, Mayor Angel Taveras is pleading for the public's help to get guns off the street.

He met with local business owners and handed out flyers touting the city's new gun tip line.

"With a lot of what's happened in the city, we really reached out to the community explaining that violence is an issue that affects all of us, and it's going to take all of us to solve, so everyone needs to get involved," said Mayor Taveras.

Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements tells Eyewitness News that police are making progress.

"There are a lot of firearms on the streets. We're dealing with it," added Clements. "In the last week we've seen six firearms off the street in the city. Just over the weekend we seized four."

If you have information about illegal guns, you are asked to call the Providence police tip line at 1-855-776-7100.

All calls to the tip line are anonymous.
