Consumer Financial Protection Bureau debuts site

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A new complaint database debuted Tuesday for credit card holders who wish to make there issues public.

Congress established the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Tuesday it launched a new website that allows your problems to be made public to not only your credit card company but to policy makers and other consumers.

Banking trade groups aren't completely on board saying baseless complaints could be hard to separate from legitimate ones. However, the bureau says that no complaint will be posted online until the alleged offender confirms it did business with the consumer.

The agency says it will use the information to track and identify potential problems and is also a helpful research tool to use before you sign up for a credit card.

The database includes:

  • Information about the actions taken on a complaint
  • whether the company's response was timely
  • how the company responded
  • and whether the complaint was resolved

The database will not include personal information.

Banks and financial institutions have 15 days to respond to a complaint and 60 days to act on it.
