(WPRI) - Cumberland native Rocco Baldelli was misdiagnosed when doctorstold him he had mitochondrial disease.
Eyewitness News spoke with Baldelli's father Tuesday, and hesays iIt turns out Baldelli actually has a condition known aschannelopothy.
Baldelli was at the Cleveland Clinic last week undergoingfurther tests when a doctor at the clinic determined that Baldellihad the treatable channelopothy.
That disease is in stark contrast to mitochondrial disease whichis genetic and can be fatal.
Baldelli is now a free agent after playing for the Tampa BayRays for his entire Major League career. His father says Baldelliis working out everyday, and once he's on the new medication, hecould be back to his old self very soon.
