The first exhibition of its kind all about men's fashion is opening at The RISD Museum in Providence. It's a celebration of the ‘dandy' and the museum's curators joined The Rhode Show to talk about what we can expect to see.
Artist/Rebel/Dandy: Men of Fashion is the official name of this ground-breaking exhibit, which celebrates the history and persona of the distinctively dressed figure of the dandy.
The dandy's role as both fashion icon and the contributions of today's style leaders are explored here. And this exhibit features more than 200 objects, including innovative garments, bespoke clothing, and paintings. And every piece tells a story.

Different from other exhibitions that have explored general menswear, this is an examination and expansion on the definitions of the dandy and how innovative a figure he really is. In addition, the show highlights some well-known fashionable men by showcasing fashions worn by Fred Astaire, Mark Twain, and most notably – and the inspiration for the exhibit – Richard Merkin.
In celebration of the exhibit opening Sunday, April 28, 2013, events are taking place all weekend long – including the Museum Associate's ‘The Dandy Gala' Fundraiser on Friday with special guest André Leon Talley, Contributing Editor at Vogue.
