(WPRI) - Your effectiveness as a parent is directly related to your parenting style and relationship with your child.
"Some parents like to be more set back from their kids, and be the person that enforces their children at home, and sort of instructs the children in what to do, and some parents like to be a little more laid back, and be more of a friend figure in their child's life," said Heather Grocott of The Children's Workshop . "Everybody is different in the way they choose to parent their kids."
If you and your spouse have different parenting styles, the way to merge them together is through communication. To present a united front, have these conversations away from your kids. Remember to compromise, and always keep in mind what is best for your family.
"Communication is key. So if you and your spouse have totally different viewpoints on how to raise your child, it is important to speak in space and in an environment that is separate from your child. You don't want your child to know that the two of you are drastically different because it's just not going to work."
Children thrive with a set routine and schedule, so it's important to maintain structure both before and after school.
"Kids are so much more successful when they know what is expected of them. And that doesn't change from time to time. So in order to maintain structure before and after school in the school year just follow the same routine every day as best you can," explained Grocott.
Examples are having bedtime at the same time every day, eating dinner together as a family at the table, and homework being done at the same time and in an appropriate space.
"It's so important that they have those basic daily routines because it makes them feel more secure and comfortable,"
While away from home, it may be hard to keep all of your children's exact routines. Throughout the trip, remind them that they may be doing things at different times, but that when they return home, they will get back into their daily schedule.
"They're still responsible for washing up, brushing their teeth, when they wake up, before they go to bed. They are still taking a bath. You still have dinnertime, we're still eating our breakfast, we're still eating our lunch. The times might just vary," said Grocott.
