What exactly are Fraud and Overpayment Investigators supposed to do at the RI Dept. of Labor and Training?
Definition of Fraud and Overpayment Investigators
The Unemployment Insurance /Temporary Disability Fraud Unit focuses on issues of "working while collecting," and its investigations are focused on proving fault by the claimant receiving benefits; in the vast majority of cases, the employee and not the employer is the focus of the investigation.
The fraud unit receives referrals in a number of ways, including: cross-matching of UI records against quarterly wage records, cross-matching of UI records against the national directory of new hires, tips from sources outside the agency and flagging by UI claims processing employees.
In general, the fraud unit pursues only cases that exceed $5,000 in overpayments or that involve a repeat offender. Other cases are handled through the Unemployment Insurance overpayment unit.
