WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) -- An 18-year-old Westport man is charged with attacking his pregnant girlfriend, and lying to police to try to cover-up the crime.
Westport Police were called to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River Wednesday afternoon to speak to a man who had been stabbed in the shoulder.
The stabbing victim, 18-year-old Anthony Nieves, told investigators he and his 19-year-old girlfriend were attacked during an armed home invasion at their apartment on State Road in Westport. The woman's one-year-old son was also home at the time.
Detectives then interviewed the girlfriend who initially went along with the story, but eventually changed her tune after investigators noticed inconsistencies between her account and that of Nieves.
Westport Police say the woman, who is two-months pregnant, admitted she was the one who stabbed Nieves in the shoulder, but claims she did so in self-defense, after Nieves had thrown her to the floor, punched her in the head, ripped out clumps of her hair, and bit the side of her face.
Nieves' girlfriend also claims that he took her cell phone away to prevent her from calling from help.
Nieves was arrested when he returned home after being released from the hospital.
He is charged with domestic assault and battery on a pregnant victim, witness intimidation, and misleading police.
Police say Nieves' stab wound was minor and did not require stitches.
