PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s first kosher food pantry has opened inProvidence.
The pantry is being called a critical resource for needyfamilies who want to observe Jewish dietary laws. Susan Adler,director of JewishEldercare of RI, says it could serve up to 100 people amonth.
Adler says the harsh economic circumstances in Rhode Islandrevealed a need for a specifically kosher pantry.
AgeWellRI, a consortium that includes the Jewish Seniors Agency,Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Community Center of RhodeIsland, took on the task of creating the pantry, which will befunded by the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island.
Officials say all donated food items must be certified kosher.Adler says any item that is not kosher will be given to anotherlocal food bank.
